Study in Wuhan, Where Great Rivers Meet Great Lakes

— A City Introduction for International Students (Condensed)

Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei Province and the only sub‑provincial city in central China. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Han River, it comprises three towns: Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, hence earning the nickname “River City”. Enjoying the time-honored reputation as “a thoroughfare connecting nine provinces”, Wuhan serves as a vital comprehensive national transportation hub, a key industrial and commercial center in inland China, and the leading city along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. For international students, Wuhan boasts both the magnificence of a metropolis and the amiable charm of a river-and-lake city.

A River City, a Hub of Universities and Industry

01

A Millennium-Old River City, Cradle of the 1911 Revolution

Wuhan’s history stretches back roughly 3,500 years to the Panlongcheng Site, known as “the root of Wuhan”. Perched beside the Yangtze River, the Yellow Crane Tower ranks among the Three Great Towers south of the Yangtze River, where countless literati of past dynasties left timeless masterpieces. The Guqin Terrace keeps alive the touching tale of Boya and Ziqi — “high mountains and flowing water for a bosom friend”. In 1911, the Wuchang Uprising fired the first shot of the 1911 Revolution, which won Wuhan the title “City of the First Uprising”. In 1957, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, hailed as “the first bridge spanning the Yangtze River”, was completed and opened to traffic. The Zenghouyi Chime Bells preserved in Hubei Provincial Museum display the splendor and romance of Chu culture to the world. When wandering across this city, historical relics and legends can be spotted nearly everywhere.

A City of Universities and a Hub of Science and Education

Wuhan is nationally famous as “a city of universities”. Wuhan University traces its origin to the Ziqiang Academy founded in 1893. Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other prestigious universities also boast outstanding strength. Many academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering devote themselves to academic research here. The East Lake High‑Tech Development Zone in the eastern part of the city, widely known as “Optics Valley of China”, is a crucial base for China’s optoelectronic information industry. For international students, this place offers not only a strong academic atmosphere but also abundant internship and scientific research opportunities.

Centered on Wuhan, the high‑speed‑rail network covers most parts of China, and Tianhe International Airport operates air routes linking the city to the globe. It has a solid industrial foundation, with steel, automobile manufacturing and optoelectronic information as its pillar industries. As the headquarters of Dongfeng Automobile is located here, Wuhan is also called “China’s Auto City”. In 2019, the 7th CISM Military World Games was successfully held in Wuhan, demonstrating the city’s openness and vitality to the world. Convenient transport and a solid industrial foundation also provide numerous windows for international students to get to know modern China.
